Scotlands people - The formation of the nation of Scotland took place over centuries through the migration of peoples originally from mainland Europe and Asia. Here, Steven Keith, originally from Scotland and living in India for twenty years, explains the origins of Scotland and the Scottish people.

 
Scotlands peopleScotlands people - The Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1854 provided for the division of Scotland into registration districts. They were based on the parishes and burghs but some had to be divided and others united to form new districts. When the Act came into force on 1 January 1855 the total number was 1027. This rose to 1082 in 1910.

Scotland’s population was largely urban-based, with over eight out of ten households (83%) located in urban areas in 2019. In 2019, over half (51%) of households in Scotland earnt £25,000 or less a year. Around a quarter (24%) of households earnt more than £40,000 a year.News, features and events.
